Drinking water

Water makes up approximately 70% of the human body mass and is an important part of living well and is crucial to the metabolic process. According to NHS Choices studies suggest adults should drink 1.2 litres a day to replace fluids and prevent hydration – more when exercising or it is hot.; this is the amount the body needs to avoid dehydration and to function properly. Important minerals like magnesium and calcium, which remain after the T6 filtration process are also essential for healthy teeth and bones.

In most developed countries, household drinking water is safe enough to be consumed with a low risk of immediate or long term harm and there are no proven benefits over bottled water.  The taste of tap drinking water – mainly due to the presence of chlorine as a protection mechanism during its journey in the mains supply system , can impair the taste  and as a result put people off tap water with many turning to bottled water.

With drinking water quality closely monitored in the UK and regulated by independent drinking water inspectorates to ensure it is consistently clean, the reason people reject drinking tap water can mainly be attributed to taste and temperature.  The benefit of the T6 is its ability to remove chlorine and other impurities but retain the essential natural minerals of water so  the result is ultra-pure great tasting water.  Not only that but it dispenses it at the temperature you want – ice cold to boiling hot all at the touch of a button meaning you can drink your required daily amount easily and enjoy it!

Benefits of drinking water

  1. Chronic shortage of water supply can cause medical problems like hypertension, asthma, allergies and kidney stones. Dehydration is the number one cause of migraines and heartburn.
  2. It has been stated that drinking five glasses of water a day reduces the risk of colon cancer by 45%, breast cancer by 79% and bladder cancer by 50%.

  3. Lack of water is considered one of the main causes of nausea during pregnancy
  4.

Discs in the vertebrae of the spine consist of 75% water, if they dry up then the body has to relinquish some of its elasticity

  5. Lack of water is the number one cause of fatigue during the day.

  6. Drinking water improves the digestive process and helps prevent constipation.

  7. Water helps reduce muscle fatigue and muscle cramps. A study of athletes showed dehydration adversely affects aerobic capacity, endurance and strength. Even mild dehydration can reduce 20% of their performance, as the body is dry and blood oxygen levels drop.
  8. Drinking water instead of sugary drinks greatly reduces dental problems.

  9. Drinking water adds to the internal layers of skin moisture and prevents it from looking dry.

  10. Water cleanses the body waste products, toxic substances that cause aging.

How much water should you drink?

As a rule, a person weighing 60 pounds should drink seven - eight glasses of pure water a day. Each additional ten pounds should add one cup (cup = 250 ml). Whilst it is important to keep the body hydrated it is equally important not to drink too much as you could be diagnosed with water poisoning.

Muscle contains more water than fat tissue, water has a key role in breaking down fats therefore overweight people who want to lose weight need more water!

It is worth remembering how we lose fluids: It happens sweating, breathing (up to two cups a day) and urination. As well as during an illness - when our body temperature rises. It is important to adjust the amount you drink accordingly - for example, increased physical activity or very hot weather require additional drinking water.

There is an easy way to know whether we are drinking enough fluids – the colour of your urine should range from light yellowish to transparent when passing water - if it is constantly a dark colour, then it is highly likely that you are suffering from dehydration.

How to increase the amount we drink

Many people do not like or are not used to drinking too much water during the day. We are all born with the thirst mechanism, but somewhere we lost it along the way. Many people wait for the feeling of thirst to come over them, e.g. a dry mouth, however this is a sign of severe dehydration so it is always better to drink little and often throughout the day.

What to drink

The T6 water dispenser from Strauss Water uses a sophisticated triple-purification process that kills bacteria and cleans and retains organic materials keeping all the good stuff in! The method of boiling tap water to ensure it is clean often means it loses vital calcium and other important minerals.

Most soft drinks are produced using distilled water meaning essential minerals are often removed, not to mention the amount of sugar and chemicals that are added!

Caffeinated beverages are also not recommended, because they cause the body to lose fluid too quickly. They also stimulate secretion of insulin, a hormone that causes weight gain! Alcoholic beverages and fruit juices contain lots of sugar too and should be consumed sparingly – there is no substitution for pure, clean water, especially from the T6 water dispenser!
